Recently, I have been making some CSS changes for Wish & Tell and did x-browser testing between Chrome and Firefox. It was the first time I noticed how different things rendered between the two!
For instance, anything without a specified width would be just fine on Chrome, but on Firefox - completely different story! I had to declare widths on everything which suffered from this problem! And don’t even get me started on fonts…
To some experienced web designers and developers that are very CSS fluent, you may be thinking: “what a noob!”. To my defense, I specialize in server side and systems application development and am nowhere near a CSS guru, but I am not on trial here - the browsers are! :)
Why is it that so many browsers behave so differently? Browsers are supposed to be the medium in which the web is viewed and used. So why the differences, when a DVD will play the same exact way on every DVD player out there?!
It’s really all about innovation. Standards move slowly and don’t address evolving features and usage. In an effort to make things quicker and more polished, these same standards are implemented differently.
To an extent, these so called “browser wars” resonate with the OS wars in the 80’s and 90’s! You had the legions of Windows users, the Macintosh loyalists, and the rebels running a Linux distro. People picked an OS based on what they wanted to do with their computer. This is similar to the way people pick their browsers.
I remember 3 years ago, Firefox was the de-facto browser for web development all because of Firebug. Once Chrome hit the scene with a super fast Javascript engine and awesome dev tools, I made Chrome my default browser for everything - browsing and development! I loved the HTML5 and CSS3 compliancy in Chrome. Until 3 days ago, I would do all my development on Chrome and then mod all the code for IE, Safari, and Firefox.
When I saw the sharp contrast in renditions, I changed my methodology. I now do all my development on Firefox and do the x-browser mods after like I used to. Before making the switch to Chrome, I did all my development on Firefox because I knew that it would look and run great on Chrome and Safari.
Like every Technology team at every company, at Wish & Tell, we too want the edge. Any methodology that allows us to get from the whiteboard to implementation to release in an efficient manner is welcomed. We feel that developing on Firefox, removes a ton on x-browser fixes since it’s stricter (or dumber, depending on how you look at it) than Chrome.
Let me know what you think. The forum is open for discussion!

Disclaimer: This is not an endorsement for Firefox (I promise Mozilla is not paying me). Firefox is too slow for my browsing tastes, so Chrome is still my preferred browser.
“The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want.” - Ben Stein
It’s that simple folks! Sometimes we get so caught up in lifes complexities that we forget that everything begins with the simplest of actions. Before we can walk and then run, we first have to crawl. Before we learn how to read and write stories, we first have to learn the letters of the alphabet. When things get complicated we have to go back to the basics and realize that everything starts with an idea. So before we get what we want, we first have to decide what it is that we really want.
